From the recording Demeter
Demeter is the Greek goddess of agriculture, the harvest, and fertility. She is also associated with health, birth, and marriage.
Mythology
Demeter was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea, and the sister of Zeus.
She was the patron goddess of farmers and taught humans how to cultivate and reap the harvest.
Demeter's daughter was Persephone, who was kidnapped by Hades, the god of the underworld.
Demeter's grief over her daughter's disappearance caused a hunger.
An agreement was reached that Persephone would spend part of the year with Hades and the rest with Demeter. This cycle is the mythological explanation for the seasons.
Symbols
Demeter's symbols included the cornucopia, scythe, wheat, bread, and harvest grains.
Her sacred animals were the snake and the pig.
Her Roman equivalent is Ceres.
